Stanley Kubrick quote: “In his essay on the Uncanny, Freud said the Uncanny is the only feeling which is more powerfully experienced in art than in life.“
Kubrick was commenting on Sigmund Freud’s theories of The Uncanny

Sigmund Freud wrote groundbreaking theories on the unconscious and the Uncanny. Also, twentieth-century Surrealist pioneers such as Salvador Dali and Andre Breton sought him out to discuss themes of the unconscious in their own work.

Welcome To The Sur-REEL & Uncanny Film Fest
This London film festival seeks international filmmakers whose work is inspired by the unconscious in any way.
Therefore, surreal, ‘uncanny’, dreamlike or experimental films are encouraged. Directors inspired by the works of David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Luis Bunuel for example, or even the theories of Sigmund Freud.

This film festival offers:
- A physical screening in London, UK before an audience.
- Selected filmmakers will be featured in a book about surrealism & the uncanny.
- Free film festival submission for the first month.
- Low submission fees of £5 no matter what the film festival category.
The free submission and low fees are because we recognise that most independent filmmakers are struggling on low budgets and our first priority is to promote great work and discover the next ‘uncanny’ talent.
Narrative shorts, experimental films and documentaries are all considered.
