The FIRST film festival of its kind to bring together Surrealism and the Uncanny
“In his essay on the Uncanny, Freud said that the Uncanny is the only feeling which is more powerfully experienced in art than in life.“ – Stanley Kubrick, commenting on Sigmund Freud’s theories of The Uncanny
Sigmund Freud wrote groundbreaking theories on the unconscious and the Uncanny. Also, twentieth-century Surrealist pioneers such as Andre Breton sought him out to discuss themes of the unconscious in their own work.
And our film festival is inspired by his theories of the unconsious, so…
Welcome To The Sur-REEL & Uncanny Film Fest
This London film festival seeks international filmmakers whose work is inspired by the unconscious in any way.
Therefore, surreal, ‘uncanny’, dreamlike or experimental films are encouraged. Directors inspired by the works of David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick, Luis Bunuel or Yorgos Lanthimos for example or even the theories of Sigmund Freud.
This film festival offers:
- A physical screening in London, UK before an audience.
- Selected filmmakers will be featured in a book about surrealism & the uncanny.
- Free film festival submission for the first month.
- Low submission fees of £5 no matter what the film festival category.
The free submission and low fees are because we recognise that most independent filmmakers are struggling on low budgets and our first priority is to promote great work and discover the next ‘uncanny’ talent.
Narrative shorts, experimental films and documentaries are all considered.
